Essays in Revenue Management and Dynamic Pricing Soheil Yousef Sibdari Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial and Systems Engineering Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Dr. Kyle Y. Lin, Chair In this dissertation, I study two topics in the context of revenue management. The first topic involves building a mathematical model to analyze the competition between many retailers who can change the price of their respective products in real time. I develop a game-theoretic model for the dynamic price competition where each retailer’s objective is to maximize its own expected total revenue. I use the Nash equilibrium to predict market equilibrium and provide managerial insights into how each retailer should take into account its competitors’ behavior when setting the price. The second topic involves working with Amtrak, the national railroad passenger corporation, to develop a revenue management model. The revenue management department of Amtrak provides the sales data of Auto Train, a service of Amtrak that allows passengers to bring their vehicles on the train. I analyze the demand structure from sales data and build a mathematical model to describe the sales process for Auto Train. I further develop an algorithm to calculate the optimal pricing strategy that yields the maximum revenue. Because of the distinctive service provided by Auto Train, my findings make important contribution to the revenue management literature.

A green transportation location-inventory-routing problem by dynamic regional pricing
Non-uniform distribution of customers in a region and variation of their maximum willingness to pay at distinct areas make regional pricing a practical method to maximize the profit of the distribution system. By subtracting the classic objective function, which minimizes operational costs from revenue function, profit maximization is aimed. A distribution network is designed by determining the...
متن کاملCommissioned Paper An Overview of Pricing Models for Revenue Management
In this paper, we examine the research and results of dynamic pricing policies and their relation to revenue management. The survey is based on a generic revenue management problem in which a perishable and nonrenewable set of resources satisfy stochastic pricesensitive demand processes over a finite period of time. In this class of problems, the owner (or the seller) of these resources uses th...
متن کاملCooperative network flow problem with pricing decisions and allocation of benefits: A game theory approach
Several real problems in telecommunication, transportation, and distribution industries can be well analyzed by network flow models. In revenue management, pricing plays a primary role which increases the profit generated from a limited supply of assets. Pricing decision directly affects the amount of service or product demand. Hence, in traditional maximum flow problem, we assume that the dema...
متن کاملAssessing the Value of Dynamic Pricing in Network Revenue Management
Dynamic pricing for a network of resources over a finite selling horizon has received considerable attention in recent years, yet few papers provide effective computational approaches to solve the problem. We consider a resource decomposition approach to solve the problem and investigate the performance of the approach in a computational study. We compare the performance of the approach to stat...
